The PwD Cafe: Redefining Service and Hospitality with Inclusivity

  • Published on Mar. 09, 2026

In the heart of the bustling Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur, a unique Sodexo team is rewriting the rules of hospitality. Welcome to the PwD café – a vibrant eatery managed by seven extraordinary individuals – five men and two women – all of whom are deaf and mute, and team manage a 450-pax lunch rush with remarkable precision. By communicating in sign language and understanding the nuances of quick service and operational excellence, the team has successfully operated the café for over six months now, earning the respect and appreciation of the client’s employees for their efficiency and ever-present smiles.

Inaugurated in August 2025, the café was initiated by Tata Motors as a partnership with  Sodexo and SABAL (an initiative by the Tata Foundation to empower people with disabilities). These seven individuals joined Sodexo with basic education and very little professional grooming, prompting us to customise everything from induction to café design to ensure that they were well set on a career path built on safety and dignity.

While the café runs like clockwork now, the preliminary steps were fairly challenging, largely to ensure that both the client requirements and Sodexo’s service standards were met. After a prolonged induction, including two weeks of safety training and expert coaching, the team moved on-ground, in a cafe customised with flashing lights and tactile marking for easy manoeuvring and alerts. The success of these efforts were palpable on inauguration day, as the team stood proud in PwD Café t-shirts and celebrated their new start with personal ‘joining gifts’. At the time of the launch, onsite branding drove awareness around the café and built sensitivity among visitors.

Safety is core value at Sodexo, alongside inclusivity and uncompromising quality. So looking after this group of people came with an additional layer of responsibility and sensitivity for our site leadership. One of the initiatives taken is a WhatsApp group where the team informs the site leaders every day once they have reached home safely.

With the café running inside the plant, a great deal of logistics and guidelines came into play. Sodexo’s responsibility extended to ensuring an additional level of safety, security and consideration for the staff alongside uninterrupted operations.

Today, the PwD Café is a hub of celebration. Whether it’s a birthday or International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the team celebrates every milestone together. The impact of their work is now seen at the entrance of the café, where one team member has created a stunning artwork on Equality, which was officially inaugurated and appreciated by the client.

It’s especially heartening to see that the impact of the café is expanding beyond its four walls. In March 2026, the site will soon launch a new counter featuring a multi-staffed model of PwD and non-PwD staff, men and women, who will work together to uphold Sodexo’s core values of Team Spirit, Service Spirit and Spirit of Progress. It is stories like this that tell us that true excellence can come from anywhere – and while it doesn’t always stem from a voice, it can begin with a simple vision.
